A study of tungsten migration in the Alcator C-Mod divertor

چکیده
A toroidally-continuous row of bulk tungsten (W) tiles was installed near the typical location of the outer strike–point in the Alcator C-Mod divertor and was removed for analysis after two campaigns (3151 plasma discharges). External beam (in–air) particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis has been used to observe campaign–integrated Wmigration patterns in the otherwise Mo divertor using the W as a tracer for divertor erosion and transport. With a set of high spatial resolution PIXE measurements (∼3 mm resolution), poloidal profiles of W migration have been constructed. Redeposition of up to 1.5× 10atoms/m (∼20 nm equivalent thickness) is observed on the outer and inner divertor, and in the private–flux region. The campaignintegrated deposition on the analyzed tiles corresponds to net W erosion of ∼60 nm ( > 0.014 nm/s). The migration profiles indicate sputtering and prompt redeposition in the outer divertor, neutral and ion transport through the private–flux region, and transport in the scrape off layer.

Comparison of tungsten nano-tendrils grown in Alcator C- Mod and linear plasma devices
Growth of tungsten nano-tendrils (“fuzz”) has been observed for the first time in the divertor region of a high-power density tokamak experiment. After 14 consecutive helium L-mode discharges in Alcator C-Mod, the tip of a tungsten Langmuir probe at the outer strike point was fully covered with a layer of nano-tendrils. The depth of the W fuzz layer (600 ± 150 nm) is consistent with an empirica...
متن کاملThe Effect of Baffling on Divertor Leakage in Alcator C-Mod
Abstract The effect of divertor baffling on Alcator C-Mod has been investigated using a novel divertor bypass. The bypass allows in situ variations in the leakage conductance between the divertor plenum and the main chamber. The experimental results, supported by simple modeling, suggest that C-Mod operates in a regime where the leakage flux is independent of the leakage conductance. The relati...
متن کاملAnalysis of tungsten migration from the C-MOD divertor; prediction of high redeposition rate, and code validation progress
For acceptable magnetic fusion reactor performance it is critical that net erosion of high-Z plasma facing material be much less than gross erosion. A detailed simulation of outer divertor-sputtered tungsten migration in the C-MOD tokamak, over an extended plasma campaign, shows a high ratio, ∼×10, of gross/net erosion, no core plasma contamination, and moderate transport of tungsten to lower d...
متن کاملConfinement and divertor studies in Alcator C - Mod
Early results from the Alcator C-Mod tokamak indicate that ohmic energy confinement does not obey the Neo-Alcator scaling. Instead 'Ohmic L-mode' confinement, close to ITER89-P, is obtained, which substantially exceeds Neo-Alcator under some circumstances. ICRF-heated plasmas follow the same scaling. H-modes are observed both in ohmic and ICRF heated plasmas, with confinement enhancements of ab...

The achievement of large volumetric power losses (dissipation) in the Alcator C-Mod divertor region is demonstrated in two operational modes: radiative divertor and detached divertor. During radiative divertor operation, the fraction of SOL power lost by radiation is P R/PSOL0.8 with single null plasmas, n e < 2x10 20 m-3 and I < 1 MA. These plasmas sometimes have very high recycling, with nedi...
